This is Nietzsche’s doctrine of eternal recurrence, as depicted in The Gay Science and Thus Spoke Zarathustra. It is clear that Cohle recounts this idea in a pessimistic manner; indeed it magnifies the absurdity of life by declaring its endless repetition. The concept of eternal recurrence is fundamental and imperative throughout the works of Nietzsche. According to another philosopher in the name of Martin Heidegger, Nietzsche, though advocating the theory of eternal recurrence, did not really argue that such phenomenon has existed or is existent. Notes on Nietzsche’s eternal recurrence Somewhat surprisingly given its prominence in the interpretation of Nietzsche’s work, the motif of eternal recurrence occurs explicitly only a few times in his published books: in certain passages and episodes in The Gay Science, Thus Spoke Zarathustra and Beyond Good and Evil, for instance.

Rather than positing an as-yet unexperienced perfection, Nietzsche would be the prophet of something that has occurred a countless number of times in the past. Others maintain that willing the eternal recurrence of the same is a necessary step if the Übermensch is to create new values, untainted by the spirit of gravity or asceticism.
According to another philosopher in the name of Martin Heidegger, Nietzsche, though advocating the theory of eternal recurrence, did not really argue that such phenomenon has existed or is existent. Finally, Nietzsche wrote in his notes for Will to Power that “A doctrine is required, strong enough to have the effect of breeding: strengthening the strong, paralyzing and breaking the world-weary.” (862) This is a very helpful note because it suggests that eternal recurrence is, to Nietzsche, a doctrine employed for instrumental reasons: it is something which one uses. Nietzsche celebrated this recurrence because of the power of belief in it to bring about a revaluation of values focused wholly on the value of one’s endlessly repeating life.
